Dolce and Gabbana Eyewear: The Good,The Bad & the Ugly
The designers Dolce & Gabbana have been making consistently high-quality clothing
and accessories for the past 25 years, and throughout this time they’ve been influential and revolutionary
players in the world of fashion. At this point, even when they make missteps, the result is always at least
interesting, and the brand name recognition on its own is usually enough to make sure that all of their
products sell moderately well. When they started making their more “urban” and youth-oriented D&G line of
clothing and accessories, I thought they were making a mistake by going along with a few fleeting trends such
as hoodies and large-print brand-name logos. Of course, the line went on to prove me wrong by become wildly
popular and successful.
When it comes to Dolce & Gabbana’s eyewear, there are definitely some frames and
sunglasses that I could live without, but they more than make up for it with a variety of high-quality,
well-designed items that are both fashionable and useful. The one downside to Dolce & Gabbana’s eyewear
is that it can sometimes be a bit expensive for those of us who don’t have deep pocketbooks. They do a good
job of releasing a few more affordable items here and there, but overall the prices are definitely oriented
toward people with some money.
Dolce & Gabbana’s sunglasses range from the tasteful and simple to the unbearably
over-the-top. For instance, some of their cheaper models like the 2192s, the 2200s, and the 2075s are not
going to be seen on any fashion runways in the near future, but that’s not a bad thing. They’re just
unpretentious, perfect for everyday use and not so expensive that you have to think twice about the money you
spend on them.
On the other end of the spectrum, models like the D&G DG6019 Gold are the sort of
thing that I can’t imagine ever wearing. The huge gold frames with the D&G logo along the side are not
designed to be understated. They’re there to grab attention and say “Look at me! I wear Dolce and Gabbana!”
Maybe that works for some people, but I believe that no amount of brand name appeal is enough to make up for
a poorly designed product. I’ll take a well-designed pair of sunglasses from an unknown company any
day.
Dolce & Gabbana’s glasses frames are a little bit of a different story, as they’re
much more oriented toward being useful, rather than conspicuously fashionable. Of course, coming from Dolce
& Gabbana, it would be hard for them not to be fashionable, and many of them are quite sharp-looking and
hip. But when we talk about eyeglasses, we often mean something that you’re going to want to wear for hours
on end at work, so comfort and tastefulness become huge factors. For me, models like DG 1123, DG 1108-B, and
DG 1178 strike a perfect balance, and you may even see me go a little wild with the more colorful and fun DG
3001-Bs. Prices vary between around $150 and $250, which is not a bad deal for frames that will last for
years.
