Dolce & Gabbana DG 4033: Who Says Glasses Can’t be Stylish?

Remember all those moves from the 80s where the filmmakers would take an attractive young actress and frump her up with glasses, goofy clothes, a nasally voice, and quirky interests like math and science fiction? And this was supposed to be enough to make us think that she was a nerd and that the popular boys wouldn’t see anything in her? It was always funny, because those of us watching the movies were perfectly aware that there was a barely hidden Hollywood starlet under the nerd uniform. We knew that if it were real life, everyone from the jocks to the rebellious boys to the math geeks would be clamoring for her attention.

What was it about those filmmakers that made them think that glasses were enough to make a beautiful person unattractive? As a child of the 80s, I remember that kids would occasionally get made fun of for wearing glasses, but they usually had plenty of other issues that made them targets for bullying. At the same time, there were plenty of perfectly mainstream people, even a few popular kids, who had to wear glasses, and if they were normal in every other way, they usually wouldn’t catch grief for it.

Where am I going with this, you may ask? Why, Dolce & Gabbana’s DG 4033 frames, of course. Where else? You see, something interesting happened between the 80’s and the 00s. As I’ve been saying, th idea that glasses equal nerdiness is basically a Hollywood creation and not grounded in reality. But naturally, given the power that movies have in our culture, that’s enough to make it a widely held belief. Myth it may be, but myths can be powerful.

And if you know anything about fashion, you know that things go in 10- or 20-year cycles.Think hoop earrings, flare jeans, Hush Puppies, Converse, V-neck sweaters, and so on. Just a few years ago, many of these things were considered among the lowest of the low in fashion, but today they’re coming back. In other cases, something similar happens with things that were never fashionable in the first place, like trucker hats, mullets, cowboy boots, and acid washed jeans. This stuff was never cool before, and now suddenly it is—at least among some people.

Which brings us to Geek Chic. Never heard of this term? Even if you haven’t, you’ve probably seen it, whether in real life or in the media. It’s now the height of fashion to wear certain types of traditionally nerdy clothes—for example, thick-framed glasses. Don’t believe me? Check out the Dolce & Gabbana DG 4033 glasses. These are not designed for people who watch Star Trek and program computers all day. They’re for people who want to look glamorous and fashionable, with a little bit of humor and character.

The DG 4033s come in several different color schemes, including Green and Red, Blue and Purple, Black, and Blue. The color schemes may be slightly gawdy, but in a way that’s the point. Best of all, you can find them, sans prescription, for as low as $45-50. If you want to go for that goofy, frumpy, fashionable 80s look, that’s a great deal.
